Artist's Description

A juvenile sea lion waves its flipper to say hello. The Australian Sea Lion (Neophoca cinerea) is one of the rarest species in the world with an estimated population of 12,000 found in South Australia and Western Australia. Males have brown hair and a blonde mane and females and juveniles have ash-grey hair on top with cream underbellies. This photo was taken at Seal Bay Conservation Park on Kangaroo Island in South Australia. The Australian Sea Lion is listed as endangered and declining. Visitors to Seal Bay Conservation Park can have a guided tour on the beach with the sea lions and it is a privilege to see them in their natural habitat with no cages or enclosures. Fees collected for the tours are used for conservation and protection purposes.
