Description
The beautiful and quaint Hofskirkja was the last turf church built in Iceland in the old, traditional style. It is one of six turf churches remaining in Iceland. The original church was built in 1884 and restorations were completed in the 1950s.
The walls of the church are made of timber and rocks with a stone slab roof covered in turf. The turf roof assists with retaining heat in the church building. The church looks like it is sinking into the ground but it was deliberately built partly buried to help with heat retention. The burial mounds in the cemetery enhance the illusion of a sinking building.
Hofskirkja is still operating as a parish church.
