Description
The Icelandic Horse is the only breed of horse in Iceland and is loved by both Icelanders and visitors for its beauty and temperament. Its small and sturdy stature has evolved to withstand the harsh Icelandic weather conditions. Although the average height is around only140 centimeters, the Icelandic Horse is not considered to be a pony.
The Icelandic Horse has been purebred for 1000 years and suffers from few diseases. The average lifespan is about 40 years. Other horse breeds are not permitted to be imported into Iceland, and if an Icelandic Horse leaves Iceland it cannot return.
Farmers still use the Icelandic Horse for sheep herding in the Highlands. Other uses include leisure riding, competition, racing and shows.
