Description
Jokulsarlon is an iconic natural wonder in Southeast Iceland. The name Jokulsarlon translates to Glaciers River Lagoon. The lagoon formed in 1934 when warmer temperatures caused the Breidamerkurjokull glacier, an outlet glacier of Vatnajokull Glacier, to retreat.
Jokulsarlon covers approximately 18 square kilometers and is Iceland's deepest lake with a maximum depth of 248 meters. The lagoon connects with the Atlantic Ocean and the mixture of sea and fresh water creates its unique color.
The icy landscape continually changes as ice breaks away from the glacier and slowly melts and drifts out to sea. Jokulsarlon has become a must see location for visitors to Iceland to view its unique and everchanging beauty.
