The Australian Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) is one of the largest reptiles in the world. They can measure up to 5 meters or more and can have a lifespan of 70 years.
It is one of the most dangerous animals in Australia, being large, aggressive and territorial. They usually feed on small reptiles, fish, turtles and wading birds, and have been known to eat wild pigs, buffalo and livestock. When they sense their prey they can emerge from the water thrashing the powerful tail and drag the prey into the water, holding it under until it drowns. There is an average of about 2 crocodile attacks on humans per year in Australia and it is vital to be educated about crocodile safety when in the northern parts of the country.
