Description
Katherine Gorge (indigenous name Nitmiluk Gorge) is the main attraction in Nitmiluk National Park in Northern Territory, Australia. The gorge is located approximately 240 kilometers southeast of Darwin.
The Katherine Gorge system consists of thirteen gorges carved through the Arnhem Land Plateau by the Katherine River fed by torrential rain. The sandstone cliffs reach up to 100 meters high.
The gorge system can be explored by foot, canoe, boat or helicopter. In the dry season, the waters are perfect for swimming and canoeing, and the gorges are separated by rocks. In the wet season, the water levels are high and the gorges are interconnected with water over the rocks. Swimming is not allowed during the wet season as saltwater crocodiles can make their way into the waterways. The saltwater crocodiles are removed before the area is reopened for swimming.
