Description
The Black-tailed Prairie Dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) is a member of the Sciuridae family. Although it is part of the squirrel family, it is named because of its bark used to warn of predators. The Black-tailed Prairie Dog's habitat is the sparsely vegetated grasslands of the Great Plains of North America, east of the Rocky Mountains. The prairie dog is a social animal that digs a colony or town of burrows. The size of the colony can range from five to thousands.
