Description
Reynisfjara black sand beach is one of the most unique and beautiful beaches in the world. The black sand is formed by eroded volcanic rocks that have been created by lava flowing into the ocean and turning black as it cools and hardens. The sand always appears black because it is always wet.
Although beautiful, Reynisfjara can also be extremely dangerous, wild and dramatic. There is no significant land mass between Antartica and the beach and this allows the waves of the Atlantic Ocean to be powerful and unpredictable. Rogue sneaker waves will occasionally come much further up the sand than other waves and this has been known to catch many people unawares. The strong rip current offshore can drag people out into the cold ocean and unfortunately there have been fatalities at Reynisfjara.
One of the highlights of Reynisfjara is the spectacular group of sea stacks called Reynisdrangar. These stacks were once part of the mountain Reynisfjall that is above the beach.
