Description
The Twelve Apostles are a group of sea stacks found on the dramatic coastline along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia and they are an iconic gem of Australian tourism. The Apostles were formed by erosion of the limestone cliffs caused by the extreme weather conditions of the Southern Ocean. The constant pounding from powerful waves and winds created caves in the cliffs and over time arches were formed and eventually the arches collapsed leaving the remaining rock stacks.
The stacks were given their name in the 1920's. Although there were never twelve stacks the name has remained. One of the stacks collapsed in 2005, and the current rate of erosion is approximately 2 centimeters each year. Over time, new stacks will form from further erosion of the cliff face.
