Description
Gullfoss (Golden Falls) is one of the most iconic waterfalls in Southwest Iceland. It is a very popular tourist stop along the Golden Circle route and has been named in the top ten waterfalls in the world. The waterfall was named Golden Falls due to the sediment in the glacial water creating a golden glow in the sunlight.
The water of Gullfoss comes from the meltwater of the glacier Langjokull flowing in to the Hvita River, which then cascades in two stages into the Gullfossgjufur Canyon. The first stage is a drop of 11 meters (36 feet), with the second stage at a 90 degree angle to the first and dropping a further 21 meters (69 feet) into the canyon below. Although the total drop of 32 meters (105 feet) is relatively short in comparison to other waterfalls, the steep canyon walls give an illusion that the water is falling into an abyss. The power of the water flow and resulting spray add to this illusion.
This photo gives a closer look at the strength of the cascading water of Gullfoss.
