The koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) is an arboreal herbivorous marsupial native to Australia. It is often mistakenly referred to as a koala bear due to its cute, bear-like round head and fluffy ears. The koala is a tree-dweller preferring to live in eucalypt trees. The majority of the koala's diet consists of eucalypt leaves. The leaves provide limited energy resulting in a sedentary life with approximately 20 hours of sleep each day. The koala spends most of its active hours searching for food at night and eating. Although not an endangered species, as the koala is a much loved Australian icon, conservation measures are in place to protect the koala population.
